What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology. IVF includes a series of procedures that are used for the conception of a
baby. During this process, the eggs are collected from a woman’s ovaries and fertilised with the sperms under controlled laboratory conditions. It is one of the several techniques to help people with fertility problems to conceive a baby.
The IVF Process
Step 1 - Ovarian stimulation: The IVF cycle starts with stimulation of the ovaries with a course of hormonal medications to produce a number of eggs (normally a single egg is produced during a menstrual cycle). You will undergo routine investigations including ultrasound scans and blood tests to monitor the development of your follicles that produce eggs. Your fertility specialist will schedule the egg retrieval procedure once the eggs are ready for collection.
Step 2 – Egg Retrieval: The egg retrieval procedure is a minor minimally invasive procedure that does not involve any stitches or cuts. You will be given general anaesthesia to prepare for the procedure. The eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using catheter that is inserted through the vagina under ultrasound guidance (transvaginal ultrasound). The male partner is also required to provide a semen sample on the day of the egg retrieval procedure.
Step 3 – Fertilisation: After the egg retrieval, fertilisation can be done in the following ways: Conventional Insemination – Here harvested eggs are placed in
a dish with sperm and incubated overnight for fertilisation to occur.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection – A healthy sperm is injected directly into each mature egg to promote fertilisation. This method is used when
there is an issue with quality of semen such as low sperm count or low sperm motility. Additional procedures such as assisted laser hatching, and preimplantation genetic testing may also be recommended depending on your and your partners health. The cultured embryos can then be transferred into the uterus to achieve a pregnancy or be frozen to be used in a later cycle (called embryo freezing and frozen embryo transfer).
Who Is Eligible For IVF?
It is necessary to determine if you are a good candidate for IVF before consulting a fertility specialist in Noida. Our Greater Noida centre recommends IVF when you have:
