The walkathon was followed by a health talk on ‘how to prevent and survive a heart attack’ addressed by Dr Gunjan Kapoor, Director-Cardiology. The interactive health talk included sessions on ‘how walking and physical activities with a healthy diet & lifestyle can prevent heart ailments.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is spreading like an epidemic in our country and are responsible for high mortality. An unhealthy lifestyle and a sedentary lifestyle is a major contributors in raising the incidence of heart disease. While most of the Indian population is still unaware of the symptoms of a heart attack, through such public events we would like to take the opportunity to spread awareness on the same. The aim of this walkathon is to make people understand the ways to prevent and survive a heart attack, while a healthy diet is one of the main aspects in this, walking, exercising and regular physical activity boosts and keeps your heart healthy.” Said Dr Kapil Tyagi, Managing Director, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals.

“While heart attacks were once considered to be a problem of the elderly, current statistics show the rising incidence of heart disease in younger population also. Increased prevalence of poor lifestyle habits (smoking, alcoholism, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle) in the middle-aged population (both men and women) is attributed to a higher incidence of premature heart problems. Even though inherited conditions cannot be controlled completely but making changes to lifestyle choices can make a big difference” said Mr Yatharth Tyagi, Director, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals.

“Brisk walking is one of the best exercises to maintain a healthy heart. It helps in holistic body movement, improving heart health, lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol, and countering obesity thereby reducing the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes and more. It also promotes general wellness by helping in tackling mental stress and metabolism issues. Some form of physical activity should be taken up by people. Running or walking is one of the easiest forms of exercise, can be done at any time of the day.” Said Dr Gunjan Kapoor, Director-Cardiology, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals, Greater Noida.
